The Vampire Trilogy

Creating the Vampire Trilogy was a long and thrilling process spanning over a year and a half. I've been entranced with the archetype of the vampire since I was a young teen. In later years the roles of the hunter and victim also piqued my interest. Since I started exploring the art of perfumery I knew I wanted to create a scent for a vampire. That dream grew wider and deeper over the years to encompass the three main characters of vampiric lore and to create perfumes for them all.
While working on this trilogy I was also exploring Jungian psychology. Jung's approach to dream analysis believes every character in our dreams represent an aspect of ourselves. Jungian's often look at fairy tales like this as well. Each character is part of one psyche. It struck me so clearly how the vampire, the hunter and the desired (the victim) are in fact different aspects of every human.
The vampire is our animalistic side living out its natural urges and is most connected to our bodies. The hunter is on a spiritual quest forgoing any bodily delights in search of celestial awe. The desired is the hardest one for me to explain... Often its maiden who is curious about the outside world while the vampire is drawn to her innocence and purity. Interestingly the hunter often seems quite enamoured with the desired as well. I like to think of the desired as someone who is living in greater balance than the vampire or the hunter. Holding both earthy and spiritual delights in harmony. I imagine someone who is authentic to themselves and perhaps in their own world just venturing out to make connections with the fascination of life. The archetype embodies wonder and authenticity hand and hand. To me the world seems to hunger for authentic souls...whether it's to consume or protect them.
I will be sharing more posts down the road exploring these architypes and the choices of ingredients I used to represent them in scent. In the meantime ponder which character
speaks to you most at this time of your life.
